Loft storage and access

On this page, we’ve outlined some information and advice for customers with lofts in their homes, including restrictions on loft storage and how to access your loft if needed.

Loft storage restrictions

Your tenancy agreement states that you must not use the loft space in your property for storage purposes.

The reason for this is that storing items in the loft:

  • increases the risk and intensity of a fire
  • makes it difficult for tradespersons to access the loft when needed
  • can overload joists in the loft and risk exceeding the permissible weight restriction
  • may cause damage to existing pipework, cabling, or existing fire compartmentation.

There are also some health and safety issues associated with lofts which include:

  • the possible presence of asbestos
  • the risk of trips, slips and falls from height.

For the reasons above, we do not allow lofts in our customers’ homes to be used for storage.

Accessing your loft

If you need to access your loft for any reason, you will need permission from us first. This also applies if a third party needs to access the loft, for example, a tradesperson or contractor who needs to access the loft to install a television aerial.

To request permission for you or a third party to access your loft, please contact info@selwoodhousing.com or call us on 01225 715 715.
