Changing a fuse
A plug fuse is a safety device which is connected to the electrical circuit, to prevent excessive current flow during faults.
When an electrical circuit becomes overloaded, the fuse element will blow, interrupting and cutting off the current flow. Often this will result in a loud bang.
When you are replacing a fuse, it is important to ensure you have the correct fuse type for the plug you are looking at:
- 3A fuse tends be used within a table/standard lamp, television, computer, blender, fridge, freezer, power drills etc.
- 13A fuse tends to be used in a washing machine, dishwasher, microwave, kettle, toaster, iron etc.
- Most manufactures have now standardised plug fuse ratings to be either 3A or 13A types, however older equipment may need a 5A fuse.
Changing a plug
Over time plugs can become damaged and will need to be replaced for safety. If a wire becomes loose from a plug, this can create a serious fire or shock hazard.
