Benefits

What benefits am I entitled to?

You can use an independent, free and anonymous benefits calculator to check what you could be entitled to. This will give you an estimate of:

  • the benefits you could get
  • how much your benefit payments could be
  • how your benefits will be affected if you start work or increase your hours
  • how your benefits will be affected if your circumstances change – for example, if you have a child or move in with your partner.

What you’ll need

You’ll need accurate information about your:

  • savings
  • income, including your partner’s (from payslips, for example)
  • existing benefits and pensions (including anyone living with you)
  • outgoings (such as rent, mortgage, childcare payments)
  • council tax bill.

Turn2us

Turn2us is a national charity that provides a free and confidential benefits calculator to find out what benefits you are entitled to claim.

Attendance allowance

Attendance Allowance helps with extra costs if you have a disability severe enough that you need someone to help look after you.

You could get £72.65 or £108.55 a week to help with personal support if you’re both:

  • Physically or mentally disabled
  • State pension age or older.

Details on eligibility and making a claim online can be found on the government website, or a form can be requested by calling 0800 731 0122.

Council tax reduction

If you are on a low income or in receipt of benefits, you could be eligible for council tax reduction (sometimes called Council Tax Support).

The reduction that you could receive will depend on your circumstances, where you live (every council has its own scheme) and who lives with you.

You will have to make an application for this, it is not included in any universal credit claim.
